1. What is #TheSouthAlsoKnows?

#TheSouthAlsoKnows is a network for experts from the Global South, a searchable database for decision makers and others seeking expertise from and on the Global South, and a campaign to address the under-representation of Global South scholars and experts in international education policy discussions.

You can learn more about these activities on their separate pages, and find an introduction to why we are doing this on the About page.

2. Who can sign up to the #TheSouthAlsoKnows Network and register on the Database?

#TheSouthAlsoKnows is open to Southern education experts of all kinds,  including scholars, policy and decision makers, researchers, practitioners and professionals. Including those with experience in research, policy, practice, NGOs, international organisations, foundations and the private sector.

While registration to the NORRAG Network is open to all, registration to #TheSouthAlsoKnows is limited to experts from the Global South, according to the UN criteria of Non-OECD countries. We acknowledge that the term “Global South” is multiple, contested and carries different possible meanings. We also recognize that there are ‘Souths in the geographic North and Norths in the geographic South’ (Mahler, 2017: 1). Our focus in this initiative aims to address a central aspect of the globally uneven and unjust production, dissemination and use of research, knowledge and expertise. For more information, and to learn why we are doing this, please visit the About page.

3. Who can search #TheSouthAlsoKnows Database?

#TheSouthAlsoKnows Expert Database aims to improve access to the work of education experts from the Global South. It is publicly visible on the NORRAG website. Anyone can view and search it on the internet, to find experts in and from the Global South who can contribute their expertise.

If you are a new member joining #TheSouthAlsoKnows, you will be asked to create a NORRAG member profile. Some of the details in your profile will be made publicly visible on #TheSouthAlsoKnows database, while other details will be visible only to other network members. What information is made visible and to whom is explained as part of the sign up process. No information will be displayed about you without your permission.

4. Do you have any suggestions for what to include in my #TheSouthAlsoKnows profile?

Your profile is an opportunity for you to share and describe your experience, interests and topics that are important to you.  It is also an opportunity for you to create, map and explore connections to other experts from the Global South. You will be guided through the profile creation process by an online form. We suggest that you make your profile accessible and understandable to all, and that you take time to explore other people’s profiles, expertise and interests. You will also be invited to add a picture of yourself, as well as your website, social media, University or professional page.

5. How will I hear about #TheSouthAlsoKnows networking and peer-learning opportunities?

Information about #TheSouthAlsoKnows events and other opportunities will be sent by email to #TheSouthAlsoKnows members who have indicated that they are happy to hear from us.

6. If I do not want to be contacted by NORRAG about #TheSouthAlsoKnows activities and events, can I still register for the Network and Database?

Yes, the registration form allows you to choose your contact preferences, and how and when you hear from us.

7. I know of an expert that could be listed on this site. Can I sign them up?

To protect people’s data and privacy, individuals can only create a single account in their own name. When you sign up, you will be asked to verify your member profile using your email address. If you know of a global South expert who might like to join the network, please reach out to them and encourage them to register.
